Serious concerns have been raised by safety groups as it means that drivers are unlikely to be prosecuted for driving at speeds lower than 90 mph if the police apply the “10 % plus 2 mph” formula. The AA said that sufficient enforcement and highway safety standards must be in place before considering increasing speed limits. 80 mph may be a safe speed on a good motorway in a top class car with an experienced driver and in good weather. It may not be a safe speed on lower standard stretches of motorways or dual carriageways. The proposals alarmed the Campaign for Better Transport, who said that many dual carriage ways are not built for 80 mph; an increase of the existing speed limit would be dangerous. What do you think? The Government is considering a higher national speed limit of 80 mph to apply to a much wider range of roads than previously thought. The proposals are said to increase the speed limit on other trunk roads.
