Speed Awareness Course
PDFPrintE-mail

After 48 years of driving without an accident and without a conviction for traffic offences I have been caught speeding. I did 84 mph on a dual carriage way with a 70 mph speed limit. It was in the evening and the roads were very quiet, except for two other cars overtaking me! (This is just a statement of fact, not an excuse).

I saw the unmanned camera flash and sure enough I got the Notice of impending prosecution. A little later I got an invitation to attend a speed awareness course as an alternative to prosecution. I was not aware that such courses existed.

I chose to attend and I am glad I did. The course was run by the local council and presented by two experienced drivers who have passed the advanced tests. I attended with approx 25 other villains from all walks of life and at all ages. We agreed at the end that it was a most interesting and informative four hours I spent for a long time. The course was held in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and we had to give credit to the two presenters who made it that way

Although I realize that it is impractical, I think every motorist would benefit from such a course. It made us realize how little we know about the provisions in the Highway Code and the dangers of excessive speed.

Some basic facts:

  • Only drivers who exceeded the limit by a certain amount will be offered the course. This may vary from area to area and may be at the discretion of the Police.
  • It cost me £77.50 to attend. This again may vary.
  • If you complete the course successfully, it is the end of the matter. The police wrote to me stating that no further action will be taken.
  • There is no prosecution; no points on the licence and you do not have to disclose this (to insurance companies etc).
  • Once you have attended and you are caught speeding again, you will be prosecuted! The course is offered once only.

I would like to hear other driver’s experiences and opinions please!
